Retaining Wall Bricklayers Across the Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Bricklayers builds block retaining walls right across the Sunshine Coast, in concrete block and link block.

Whether it’s a cut behind a new driveway, a level terrace carved out of a sloping backyard, or a wall that has started to bow under the ground it is holding, the blockwork is the part you can see and the smallest part of the job. Drainage, core filling and steel decide whether the wall is still straight in twenty years, and none of it goes in afterwards.

Blocks come from leading Australian manufacturers, and walls are rendered and painted in-house where you want a finished face.

Retaining Wall Types We Build

Cantilevered Walls

A footing that extends back under the retained soil, using the weight of the ground itself to hold the wall upright. The standard answer for most residential heights.

Anchored Walls

Cables or rods tied back into the ground behind the wall, used where the height or the ground conditions ask more than a footing alone can carry.

Gravity Walls

A wall heavy enough to hold the ground by mass, without tying back. Suits lower walls and sites where there is no room to excavate behind the line.

Concrete and Link Block

Both laid to the same principle: cores filled with concrete and steel to the engineer's spacing, so the wall carries the load rather than leaning on it.

Drainage and Core Fill

Aggregate, drainage line and weep holes behind the wall, with cores filled as the courses go up. This is the work that decides how long the wall lasts.

Terraced and Stepped Walls

Two or more lower walls stepping up a slope instead of one tall one, which works out better on a steep block than a single high wall.

What Changes the Price of a Retaining Wall

Retaining walls price on what they are holding back rather than on how they look, so two walls the same length can be very different jobs.

What affects the cost of a retaining wall on the Sunshine Coast:

FactorWhat it changes
Retained heightFooting size, steel spacing and core filling, and whether the wall is cantilevered, anchored or gravity
Ground conditionsRock, fill or soft ground all change the excavation and the footing under the wall
DrainageAggregate, drainage line and weep holes, plus where the water is being taken
Length and stepsA wall stepping up a slope costs more per metre than a level run of the same length
AccessWhether a machine can reach the wall line or the excavation is done by hand
FinishLeft as blockwork, or rendered and painted afterwards

Frequently Asked Questions

Block retaining walls on the Sunshine Coast are priced on what the wall is holding back. Factors affecting the cost include the retained height, the wall type, the ground conditions, the drainage and core filling, the length and any steps, and the site access. A low garden wall and a wall holding a driveway cut are not the same job.

No, retaining wall quotes are free right across the Sunshine Coast. The visit covers the fall, the ground and the access, and the written quote that follows sets out how the wall will be built.

The difference is what holds the wall up. A cantilevered wall uses a footing extending back under the retained soil. An anchored wall ties back into the ground behind it. A gravity wall holds by its own weight. Factors determining which one suits your site include the retained height, the ground conditions and how much room there is behind the line.

Retaining walls fail because of water rather than blockwork. Soil behind a wall holds water after rain and that water pushes, so a wall built without aggregate, a drainage line and weep holes is carrying a load it was never designed for. That is what bows the middle of a wall and opens cracks along the mortar beds.

Yes, drainage goes in as part of the wall rather than as an extra. Aggregate, drainage line and weep holes are installed behind the blockwork as the courses go up, because none of it can be added once the wall is backfilled.

Yes, and whether it is repaired or replaced is set by how far it has gone. There is more on retaining wall repairs, including how the cause gets identified before anything is rebuilt.

Yes, a retaining wall can be rendered and painted, and it is done in-house here rather than passed to another trade. Sand and cement render goes over the finished blockwork, which is how a structural wall ends up looking like a feature one.

  • Our Process

How Your Wall Gets Built

The following are the steps to our quick and easy process:

Concrete blocks ready for a Sunshine Coast retaining wall build

On-site quote

A licensed bricklayer looks at the fall, the ground and what the wall is retaining, and works out which wall type the site actually needs.

Written quote

The quote comes back in writing with the wall type, the footing and the drainage detail set out, not just a figure.

Excavation and footings

The line is dug out and the footings poured to suit the retained height, then left to cure before the blockwork starts.

Lay, fill and finish

Blocks are laid, cores filled, drainage installed behind the wall, then rendered and painted where that applies.
